Bidvest Wits and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a 1-1 draw in a thrill-a-minute Absa Premiership encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday evening.

The result moves the Clever Boys up to fourth place on the log standings, five points off second placed Mamelodi Sundowns and 14 points behind league leaders Kaizer Chiefs, but having played three games less than both the aforementioned teams.

Sundowns continued from where they left off at the same venue this past weekend, as Gaston Sirino fired the visitors ahead with 15 minutes on the clock.

Good work by Andile Jali down the right flank eventually resulted in an easy finish for the Uruguayan who profited from a neat Themba Zwane cut-back to fire home past Ricardo Goss.

Haashim Domingo went close with two chances within the space of six minutes, the second a fierce volley which whistled inches wide of Denis Onyango’s goal in the 22nd minute.

Wits deservedly levelled matters in first-half stoppage time as Gift Motupa profited from a pin-point Deon Hotto cross to powerfully head the two teams level, the ball almost bursting through the back of the net.

Both teams created further chances after the break with Motjeka Madisha sending his header onto the woodwork, while Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo watched his attempt from a corner-kick fly just wide.

In the end, though, both teams had to settle for a point apiece as they now focus their attention to the last round of league fixtures for the year this coming weekend.
