Bidvest Wits will look to get the New Year off to a winning start when they face hosts Stellenbosch in an Absa Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 4 January 2020. Kick-off is at 3.30pm CAT.

Wits come into the game on the back of a 0-0 draw at home to Libyan side Al Nasr in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage this past weekend, with Gavin Hunt’s men remaining active through the traditional festive-season break due to their participation in continental competition.

The Clever Boys were last in domestic action on December 20, claiming a 2-0 home win over Cape Town City at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto (courtesy of goals from Terrence Dzvukamanja and Thulani Hlatshwayo), meaning they have picked up seven points from the last nine available.

The result sees the Johannesburg side placed fourth on the log with 23 points from 11 matches – they are 12 points off the pace of leaders Kaizer Chiefs, but have played three less games. The Clever Boys are also unbeaten on the road this season, with an impressive 13 points from five matches.

Stellenbosch, meanwhile, ended a five-game winless streak and picked up three vital away points when they defeated Baroka FC 1-0 on December 21. The Cape side has claimed six points from their five home matches thus far in 2019/20, and will be aiming to improve that record in a bid to secure top-flight survival.

In head-to-head stats, Stellenbosch and Wits have met in just one previous top-flight league match. That encounter took place earlier this season, with the Clever Boys winning 2-1 at the Bidvest Stadium in August 2019, thanks to goals from Hlatshwayo and Gift Motupa.

Stellenbosch’s line-up from their 1-0 win over Baroka on December 21: De Jong, Mobbie, Ndlovu, Johannes, Mthethwa, Bergman, Motsogi (Franco 55’), Matsi, Rayners (Mathabela 87’), Isaacs (Du Preez 63’), Moon.

Wits’ line-up from their 2-0 win over City on December 20: Goss, Macheke, Hlatshwayo, Mkhwanazi, Hlanti, Monare, Alexander (Nange 64′), Hotto, Doutie (Pelembe 85′), Motupa, Dzvukamanja (Domingo 64′).
